PALM SPRINGS HISTORY
The Palm Springs Festival of Lights Parade began in 1992 as an effort to boost holiday spirit and bring people to the downtown corridor. Organizers wanted an event that matched Palm Springs’ style, so they chose a nighttime parade filled with illuminated floats and decorations.
Local groups quickly embraced the idea. Schools, marching bands, car clubs and community organizations designed glowing floats and vehicles. Celebrities and community leaders were invited as Grand Marshals, reflecting the city’s Hollywood ties. The parade soon grew from a small gathering into a signature holiday event.
As attendance increased, the parade became a tourism driver. Families and visitors line Palm Canyon Drive each December, filling restaurants, hotels and shops. Media coverage and city support helped cement its reputation as one of the valley’s biggest seasonal celebrations.
Today, the Festival of Lights Parade remains a symbol of community and creativity. It brings residents together, honors local tradition and showcases Palm Springs at its most vibrant under winter lights.
